Care Networks in Indonesia
This page provides information and resources about the research project “Care networks in later life: A comparative study of five communities in Indonesia”. The project ran from 10/2019 to 03/2024. It was led by Dr Elisabeth Schröder-Butterfill, Department of Gerontology, University of Southampton. The research was a collaboration between the University of Southampton, Atma Jaya Catholic University, Jakarta, the University of Oxford and Loughborough University. The project was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK.
How can the care needs of older people be met in sustainable, fair and culturally acceptable ways? This project aims to answer this question in relation to Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest population. It seeks to understand what care needs older Indonesians have; who provides care; what acceptable care looks like; and how care-dependent people are perceived. The project involves ethnographic research in five diverse communities. The research sites are located in West Sumatra, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, East Java, and Alor.

This briefing paper presents insights from a home visit pilot project undertaken in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It argues that home visits by trained community volunteers to older housebound people improves their access to healthcare, provides health and care advice to informal carers, and enables the continued integration of older people in their communities.
Handbook for Carers and Volunteers (Bahasa Indonesia)
This handbook includes valuable practical advice and recommendations for the care of older people by family carers or healthcare volunteers.
